Head Prefect Michael Ward’s inaugural address

Newly elected Head Prefect Michael Ward addressed today’s R-12 assembly. We’re pleased to share his speech here.

“I’d like to say how excited I am and honoured for the opportunity to welcome you back for another year at our school. I’d like to thank God for break we’ve had and the opportunities this year will bring.

“I’d especially like to extend a very warm welcome to everyone joining the Blackfriars community for the first time. We are absolutely thrilled to have you all here at this fantastic school, educating each of us for our future; a school filled with many great traditions, events and co-curricular activities to look forward to.

Head Prefect Michael Ward addresses today’s assembly.

“I hope all your holidays were enjoyable, full of moments of excitement as well as rest and that you’re ready to return and give this year your absolute best. The school has quite a roster of big-ticket items in the first term. Firstly, we have the Secondary Swimming Carnival, which I’m sure Horten and Aquinas will absolutely take away.

“Then, later in the term, we have our Athletics Carnival. On top of this, the Prefect team will be working on initiatives to have all of you involved and engaged.

“We the Prefects, and the whole Year 12 cohort, are excited to play our role in creating an environment where everyone here feels valued and included as part of the Blackfriars community.

Principal David Ruggiero chats to Head Prefect Michael Ward after the first R-12 assembly for the 2024 school year.

“We believe diversity is one of school’s strengths and, together over the year, we can really foster a sense of belonging and unity. I want you to remember, each one of you plays a crucial role in shaping the culture of Blackfriars.

“I’d like to share a quote from Ecclesiastes (4:9-10) that has recently inspired me.

“Two are better than one, because they have a good return for their labour: If either of them falls, one can help the other up. But pity anyone who falls and has no one to help them up.”

“Let’s carry this sentiment with us as we face the opportunities and challenges of this coming year.

“I’d finally like to thank all the wonderful staff for everything they’ve done in preparation for the year. I know they’re just as excited to start this new school year.

“Let’s approach this year with confidence and enthusiasm, and here’s to a fantastic school year filled with learning, laughter and lasting memories.”
