2021 Scholarships

Blackfriars offers a number of scholarships each year based on varying criteria.

Scholarships offered for the 2021 Academic Year are as follows:

St Albert the Great Academic Scholarship

2021 Applications OPEN NOW

The Australian Council for Educational Research (ACER) scholarship program is used annually at Blackfriars to award the St Albert the Great Academic Scholarship to students commencing in Year 7 or Year 8. This academic scholarship offers a 50% reduction in tuition fees for the rest of a boy’s education at Blackfriars, subject to terms and conditions being met.

The scholarship is awarded based on the results of the Australian Cooperative Entry Program (ACEP) tests. The scholarship will be awarded by the Principal upon review of the ACEP test results. The criteria for these scholarships include excellence in literacy and/or numeracy.

Br Patrick Hynes O.P. Primary Scholarship

Year 6, 2021

Applications open 1 June, 2020

The Br Patrick Hynes O.P. Scholarship is to the value of $1,500. It is awarded to the successful candidate during the first term of his Year 6 education at Blackfriars in 2021.

Eligibility

To be eligible for the Br Patrick Hynes O.P. Scholarship, the applicant must be enrolled at Blackfriars and be attending for his Year 5 education in 2020.

Selection Criteria

In appreciation of Dominican, Br Patrick Hynes O.P. the scholarship is awarded based on the applicant’s commitment to representing the four pillars of Dominican life: Prayer, Study, Community and Service.

Dac Lo Scholarship

Years 7 and 8, 2021

Applications open 1 June, 2020

Recipients of the Dac Lo Scholarship are entitled to a 50% reduction in tuition fees for the remainder of their schooling at Blackfriars.

Eligibility

The Dac Lo Scholarship is open to both new and current students entering Year 7 or 8 at Blackfriars in 2021. Applicants must be enrolled and currently studying at Dac Lo Vietnamese Language School.

Selection Criteria

The scholarship is awarded based on the applicant’s:

  • Outstanding academic ability and behaviour at school
  • Commitment to maintaining the Vietnamese language and preserving Vietnamese culture
  • Involvement in co-curricular activities
  • Financial need (and/or that of his parents/guardians).

Music Scholarship

Years 7 and 8, 2021

Applications open 1 June, 2020

Recipients of the Music Scholarship are entitled to full remission of music tuition fees with a private tutor, instrument hire, music resources and music text book fees for a period of two years. The scholarship is up to the value of $2,500 (in music fees / resources).

Eligibility

The Music Scholarship is open to both new and current students entering Year 7 or Year 8 at Blackfriars in 2021.

Selection Criteria

The scholarship is awarded based on the applicant’s:

  • Performance at a practical audition
  • Proven capacity or potential in music
  • Aural testing and interview
  • Ability to manage all academic aspects of music and school commitments 
  • Commitment to enriching the arts culture of the school by being involved in music making and performance opportunities.

Organ Scholarship

Year 7 to 9, 2021

Applications open 1 June, 2020

Recipients of the Organ Scholarship are entitled to the remission of weekly organ lessons with a private tutor for a period of two years. The scholarship is up to the value of $1,680 (in organ tutor fees).

Eligibility

The Organ Scholarship is open to current students enrolled at Blackfriars in 2020, who are entering Years 7, 8 or 9 in 2021.

Selection Criteria

The scholarship is awarded based on the applicant’s:

  • Performance at a practical audition
  • Proven capacity or potential in music
  • Ability to play the piano (must be currently taking lessons in piano)
  • Commitment to enriching the arts culture of the school by being involved in music making and performance opportunities
  • Availability to play at liturgies and other events held in the Chapel of St Albert the Great, Blackfriars.

General Excellence Scholarship

Years 7 to 10

Applications open 1 June, 2020

Recipients of the General Excellence Scholarship are entitled to a 50% reduction in tuition fees for the year in which the scholarship is awarded. 

Eligibility

The scholarship is open to both new and current students entering Years 7 to 10 at Blackfriars in 2021.

Selection Criteria

The scholarship is awarded based on the applicant’s:

  • Outstanding academic ability
  • Commitment to co-curricular activities
  • Dedication to the ideals and values of Blackfriars.

Mr John Lewis Scholarship

Year 11, 2021

Applications open 1 June, 2020

Recipients of the Mr John Lewis Scholarship are entitled to a bursary covering full tuition fee at Year 11 plus $500 for approved in-school expenses (e.g. camps, excursions, uniform, stationery, etc).

Eligibility

To be eligible for the Mr John Lewis Scholarship, the applicant must be enrolled at Blackfriars and attending the school for their Year 10 education in 2020.

Selection Criteria

In appreciation of the history of Blackfriars and its core values, the scholarship is awarded based on the applicant’s:

  • commitment to exemplifying the four pillars of Dominican life: Prayer, Study, Community and Service;
  • efforts to embrace a spirit of generosity; and
  • financial need (and/or that of his parents/guardians).

Fr John Neill O.P. Scholarship

Year 12, 2021

Applications open 1 June, 2020

Recipients of the Fr John Neill O.P. Scholarship receive a bursary covering full tuition fee at Year 12 plus $500 for approved in-school expenses (e.g. camps, excursions, uniform, stationery, etc).

Eligibility

To be eligible for the Fr John Neill O.P. Scholarship, the applicant must be enrolled at Blackfriars and be attending the school for their Year 11 education in 2020.

Selection Criteria

In appreciation of former Principal, Fr John Neill O.P., the scholarship is awarded based on the applicant’s:

  • Commitment to exemplifying the four pillars of Dominican life: Prayer, Study, Community and Service
  • Commitment to pursuing their studies with the mind of Christ
  • Financial need (and/or that of his parents/guardians).
