Blackfriars is a diverse, multicultural school and, for more than 15 years, has welcomed students from across the globe who wish to study in Australia.

The International students’ program adds an extra dimension to life at Blackfriars, enabling local and international students to think beyond boundaries, form lasting global friendships and develop an informed perspective of the world.

We have modern facilities and a strong academic curriculum that provides boys with opportunities to further their learning and engagement through comprehensive electives and specialist programs. Outside of the classroom, boys can immerse themselves in the full range of co-curricular activities on offer.

We celebrate significant festivals and cultural events with our international students and encourage all students to aspire to positions of leadership among their peers.

International students at Blackfriars consistently achieve outstanding results. This success is reflected in our end of year results where approximately 90% of our international and local students are directly accepted into local and overseas universities. The foundation laid at Blackfriars makes for an easy transition to tertiary study, with graduates pursuing a diverse range of undergraduate courses.

Boys’ education specialists

Teaching staff at Blackfriars are employed based on their achievements, qualifications and educational philosophies; in particular for their ability to convert curriculum into an engaging and inspiring experience specifically for boys and young men. They combine years of experience with contemporary teaching methodologies, up-to-date research and recent technologies to make learning enjoyable and purposeful

Programs

The programs for international students at Blackfriars are based on the Australian Curriculum and the South Australian Certificate of Education (SACE). The SACE is internationally recognised and accepted for entry to all Australian universities and in many other countries, including the USA, UK and Canada.

Students at Blackfriars explore and excel in their natural strengths, build confidence to apply themselves to more challenging subject areas, co-construct learning and lay the foundations for lifelong learning and achievement.

Student wellbeing

Blackfriars values a safe learning environment that nurtures the wellbeing of students and provides them with a place to achieve their optimum in all pursuits.

Like all students at Blackfriars, international students are allocated to a House where they meet and interact with students from other year levels and become involved in activities that promote friendly competition and cooperation. Within their House, students are assigned a Home Group teacher who works closely with the student to provide academic and personal support.

Specialist counsellors are also available to assist students with specific personal matters, English language support and to provide advice about subject selections, university and career pathways.

A home away from home

The Blackfriars Homestay Program immerses international students in Australian culture by placing them with a carefully matched local family.

With their homestay family, students experience Australian family life and hospitality while receiving the support you expect from home in a safe and encouraging environment. Students are actively encouraged to involve themselves in family life, which assists their English language development and provides opportunities to establish positive and rewarding relationships.

The homestay family is an integral part of the student’s Blackfriars community.  While the school Principal has ultimate responsibility for all students, our International Student Liaison Officer meets regularly with international students to monitor their academic progress, homestay arrangements and personal development.
