Students honoured at 2023 Laureate Assembly
Congratulations to all the students who were formally recognised at our 2023 Laureate Assembly.
At the assembly, Principal David Ruggiero presented the highest-achieving students with stems of bay leaves, taken from his mother’s bay tree.
“I enjoy cooking .. and Jesus spoke a lot about food, using it as a metaphor. And that’s because we relate to the symbolism of food,” Mr Ruggiero told the assembly.
“The bay leaf is known as laurus nobilis, from where we get the laureate. Bay leaves were fashioned into crowns to be worn by the victor, or the most outstanding in their field. It’s a wonderful symbol of success and that’s why, today, we have the Laureate Assembly.”
He said bay leaves had two main qualities in Italian cooking.
“Their flavour comes out over time, low and slow cooking, subtle, yet distinct,” he said.
“And I want this to be a symbol for you, boys, now that you’ve left Blackfriars, as you move out into world. I want you to be subtle, yet distinct.
“To be young men who subtly change the world. And then through your distinctness – you’re distinctly Blackfriars – you’ll be like the bay leaf; a wonderful flavour that, over time, will change people.”
Congratulations to all the students who were recognised at the assembly.
