Elc teacher sets wheels in motion for cancer charity

Jasmin Moore was just a Reception student, barely older than the children she now teaches at Blackfriars ELC, when she was first touched by cancer.

“I first learnt about Camp Quality when I was in Reception and a classmate of mine died of leukaemia,” Miss Moore said.

“I still remember how the Camp Quality puppets came to school and taught us all about children with cancer. 

“Fast forward to a few years ago when I became a volunteer for Camp Quality with another one of my Reception classmates.”

With that volunteer work at Camp Quality camps on hold due to COVID-19, Miss Moore decided to find another avenue to help the organisation.

She set the wheels in motion, quite literally, and, during March, set herself the challenge of cycling 300km as part of the Big Ride for Little Kids fundraiser.

Just over half-way through the month, and she has already clocked up more than 200km – and raised $2200, smashing her $1500 fundraising goal.

All money raised will go to Camp Quality services and programs to help children aged 0-15 years old who are dealing with their own cancer diagnosis, or the diagnosis of a sibling or parent.

“Every day, two Australian families are given the heart-breaking news that their child has cancer,” Miss Moore said.

“I am using this month as an opportunity to teach the children in my class about charity and ways they can help others in need.

“We have already begun discussions and reflections about this and we have a big display in the room where they can follow along and keep me accountable for the 300km.”

This week, the ELC is hosting a “Bike Week”, with students bringing in their own bicycles and helping raise even more money for Camp Quality.
