Remembrance Day marked with poetry

More than 100 years have passed since the guns fell silent, marking the end of World War I.

But the sacrifice of Australia’s servicemen and women lost to the Great War is not forgotten.

To mark Remembrance Day today, we’re pleased to share some of our Year 9 students’ work.

Mr Green’s class spent their Term 3 poetry unit studying WWI poets, such as Wilfred Owen.

Owen is considered one of the leading poets of WWI. He was was killed in action in France on 4 November 1918, one week before the signing of the Armistice that ended the war. He was 25.

The boys also investigated and researched significant WWI battles, including the Battle of Hamel.

Using information about those battles, the students created poems or raps from the perspective of an Australian soldier fighting on the Western Front.

Next week, Spoken Word SA will visit Blackfriars to run a poetry workshop with the Year 9 boys.
