Steve Breheny joins the Blackfriars co-curricular program for 2021 as our basketball head coach….

Steve Breheny joins the Blackfriars co-curricular program for 2021 as our basketball head coach. Steve has built a reputation for being one of Australia’s most respected coaches and will bring that experience to lead the development of a comprehensive structured basketball program for the Hounds across the middle and senior years. 

Steve’s experience starts with his impressive playing credentials, which include the 1980 Moscow Olympics, 1982 world championships, NBL titles with St Kilda in 1979-80 and the captaincy in that second season.

Breheny has been involved in coaching at he highest level in Australia for over 30 years, beginning with his first coaching role with Coburg in the WNBL, taking them all the way to the Australian Club Championship in 1987-88 and the WNBL Grand Final.

He then went on to lead the Canberra Cannons into the NBL grand final before taking up the head coach role at the Geelong Supercats. He saw successful assistant coaching periods with the North Melbourne Giants (1994 championship season) under Brett Brown, and Adelaide 36ers (1998-99-02 championships) with Phil Smyth. He then served as head coach of the WNBL Adelaide Lightning in 2010/11.
