Get ready to Wear It BLUE! in September

Blackfriars is about to get the blues – and we couldn’t be happier.

Throughout September, to coincide with Prostate Cancer Awareness Month, Blackfriars is encouraging students to don blue scarves and shoelaces as part of our second annual Wear It BLUE! fundraiser.

For as little as $5, you can help us make a difference in the lives of the one in six Australian men who will be diagnosed with prostate cancer by the age of 85.

It is the most-commonly diagnosed cancer among men in Australia, with more than 24,000 new cases each year. It is a disease that not only affects those diagnosed, but their families, friends and communities.

“It’s really important that our students see that school isn’t just about what happens in the classroom,” Assistant Principal: Religious Identity & Mission Angela Collins said.

“Wear It BLUE! shows them that we all have a responsibility to look after the wider community.”

All money raised through Wear It BLUE! will be donated to the Adelaide-based Australian Prostate Cancer (APC), part of The Hospital Research Foundation Group.

APC supports vital medical research into the detection and treatment of prostate cancer, as well as preventing the metastatic spread of the disease.

“Research is the key to beating this devastating disease and every cent we raise will go towards that valuable work,” Ms Collins said.

“But what I also love about campaigns like Wear It BLUE! and Wear It PINK! is the way they bring everyone together. It really highlights our Dominican pillar of Community.

“I want our boys to see that even the smallest effort can make a difference; that they’ve got the power to help shape a better future.”

Blue shoelaces and scarves are available now via The Hound Store. Wear It BLUE! will be officially launched on Wednesday 4 September, coinciding with our Father’s Day Breakfast and Liturgy.

Students can wear their blue accessories as part of their school uniform throughout September.
