Celebrating our Children’s University graduates
Austin Crampton is only 6 years old, but he has already graduated from university.
The Reception student is one of 13 Blackfriars boys – aged 6-12 – who this week graduated from Children’s University Adelaide.
Children’s University is an educational initiative designed to provide students with unique learning experiences beyond the traditional classroom setting.
Each child receives a “Passport to Learning”, where they log hours of participation in various learning activities – including museum visits, science workshops, sports, art and cultural events – outside of regular school hours.

The program also partners with local “Learning Destinations”, such as libraries, museums and zoos, which offer specific educational activities.
Assistant Head of Primary Rosie Petrilli was pleased to have Blackfriars students involved in Children’s University Adelaide for the first time in 2024.
“Children’s University opens doors for our students to explore new interests and develop a life-long love for learning,” Ms Petrilli said.
“It takes learning beyond the classroom, helping students see the world as a place of endless educational opportunities.”

She said this week’s graduation at Bonython Hall – the same place the University of Adelaide’s own graduation ceremonies were held – was “extremely special”.
“For all of our students, this Children’s University graduation was their first experience of a formal academic celebration,” she said.
“It was a wonderful experience for our students and we hope it gave them a sense of pride and accomplishment.
“Watching them walk across the stage in cap and gown was a powerful moment that showed them the rewards of hard work and dedication.”

For Austin, being part of Children’s University was “lots of fun”.
“At university, I went to the zoo and I graduated at the ceremony and I got a bronze certificate and and my mum and dad got me a teddy bear and it’s called Tommy,” Austin said.
Year 7 student Lincoln Huynh, 12, said being part of Children’s University was “a very cool experience”.
“I reckon the highlight (of the graduation) was going on the stage at Adelaide University and taking photos,” said Lincoln, who took part in Children’s University Adelaide with his Reception student brother, Levi, 6.
Children’s University Australia began in South Australia in 2013 through a partnership with the University of Adelaide. Since then, it has expanded across the country, involving multiple universities and reaching children in various states and regions.
